Study: DC Area Traffic is Worse Than Ever

Rush hour traffic on North Capitol show tail lights leading to US Capitol, Washington D.C.

Drivers throughout the D.C. area can tell you how bad traffic is in the city. There’s often an endless stream of vehicles that slows down travel, especially during rush hour. But a new study confirms what many have already noticed – it’s been getting worse.

The transportation analytics firm StreetLight Data examined the change in average daily vehicle miles traveled (VMT) per capita in metro areas across the country. VMT measures the total miles driven by all vehicles within a specific area and timeframe and can gauge the level of traffic volume on roads. A higher VMT often means increased traffic congestion, which increases the risk of car accidents.

Post-pandemic traffic surge intensifies congestion

According to research conducted by StreetLight Data, the average daily VMT per capita increased by 12.3% this past spring compared to the spring of 2019. In short, that means more people have been driving on the roads since the pandemic.

In the D.C. area, the VMT has worsened by only 0.4% over that period, but that resulted in a congestion increase of 1.1%.

This study follows a report from earlier in the year that found D.C. has the second-worst traffic in the United States.

The dangers of traffic congestion

When there are high volumes of vehicles on the road, several risk factors increase the likelihood of a car accident, including:

Frequent stop-and-go movements

In congested traffic, drivers are often required to stop and accelerate frequently. This increases the risk of rear-end collisions if drivers are not paying close attention or fail to brake in time.

Reduced reaction times

Congestion limits space between vehicles, reducing the time and distance drivers have to react to sudden stops, lane changes, or other unexpected maneuvers.

Driver frustration and aggression

Traffic congestion can lead to driver frustration and aggressive driving behaviors like tailgating, abrupt lane changes, brake checking, and speeding when opportunities arise. These behaviors significantly increase accident risks.

Distracted driving

In heavy traffic, some drivers may become bored or distracted by phones, in-car devices, passengers, or other activities, reducing their focus on the road and increasing the chance of accidents.

Lane merging conflicts

Traffic congestion, especially near exits or merges, creates situations where drivers are forced to merge or shift lanes. This increases the likelihood of sideswipe collisions and other accidents if drivers fail to check blind spots or use turn signals.

Increased fatigue

Long periods in stop-and-go traffic can lead to driver fatigue, reducing alertness and reaction times.

Injured in a DMV crash?

If you or someone you love has been injured in a crash in D.C. or anywhere in the DMV, a car accident lawyer can help you navigate the complex legal and insurance processes to ensure you receive fair compensation for your losses. This often involves:

  • Gathering evidence: A lawyer can collect evidence, such as police reports, witness statements, and medical records, to build a strong case on your behalf.
  • Negotiating with insurance companies: Insurance companies often try to minimize payouts. A lawyer can negotiate with insurers to ensure you receive compensation that accurately reflects the damages and losses you’ve experienced.
  • Determining liability: In cases where fault may be disputed, a lawyer can help establish liability by reviewing accident details and consulting experts if necessary.
  • Calculating damages: A lawyer can help assess the full extent of your damages, including medical expenses, lost wages, property damage, and pain and suffering, to seek appropriate compensation.
  • Handling legal deadlines: A lawyer ensures all paperwork and legal deadlines are met, which is crucial in personal injury cases where statutes of limitations apply.
  • Providing legal representation: If a fair settlement can’t be reached, a lawyer can file a lawsuit and represent you in court to pursue maximum compensation.
